The standard clearly acknowledges that such plans entail the swift reduction of fossil fuel production and an end to new production projects. However, it then undermines its own position by allowing investors to continue to support companies that develop oil and gas projects in defiance of a 1.5\u00b0C trajectory and letting companies avoid reducing their emissions through massive carbon capture and offsetting. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p align=\"justify\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW255362830 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW255362830 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\">Developed by the IIGCC and TPI, with the active collaboration of <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iigcc.org\/news\/investors-representing-usd-10-4-trillion-set-out-standard-for-net-zero-transition-plans-in-the-oil-and-gas-sector\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\">20<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\">global investors<\/span><\/a><\/u><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\"> with collective assets of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\">$<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW188445682 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">10.4 trillion<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\">, the standard sets a framework to supplement the Climate Action 100+ <\/span><\/span><u><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW188445682 BCX2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climateaction100.org\/progress\/net-zero-company-benchmark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW188445682 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Net-Zero Company Benchmark<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188445682 BCX2\"> to allow investors to compare strategies pursued by oil and gas companies. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>IIGCC did not define what the consequences of non-alignment with this framework will be for oil and gas companies, nor what it implies for its members\u2019 own exclusion and engagement policies. However, it <u><\/u><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iigcc.org\/news\/investors-representing-usd-10-4-trillion-set-out-standard-for-net-zero-transition-plans-in-the-oil-and-gas-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a \u201cpilot programme\u201d<\/a> <\/u>to trial implementation on a few oil and gas majors &#8211; BP, Eni, Repsol, Shell and TotalEnergies &#8211; before \u201cwider roll out across the sector\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-one\" style=\"--awb-text-color:#59bc6d;--awb-margin-bottom:15px;--awb-font-size:16px;\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h1 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;--fontSize:16;--minFontSize:16;line-height:1.4;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Accepting the climate science: production reduction and the end of expansion<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IIGCC\u2019s new standard does not negate climate science. Acknowledging recent developments and the responsibility of the oil and gas sector in the climate crisis and transition, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the standard underlines that reaching carbon neutrality means ending new fossil fuel production projects and reducing production before 2030<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in a net zero scenario global oil and gas production must fall significantly by 2050 and this decline must begin well before 2030<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d (P.19)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The IEA\u2019s Roadmap for Net Zero clearly states there should be no new oil and gas fields approved for development. In this context oil and gas companies wishing to align with net zero should acknowledge the need to reduce supply globally and adjust their investment plans accordingly. To avoid the risk of sanctioning long lived investment that would contribute to global emissions exceeding the 1.5oC budget or result in stranded assets, they should decrease overall fossil fuel capex. Upstream investment, particularly exploration and new oil projects, should be significantly curtailed given the need for production to decrease before 2030.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d (P.19)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These key expectations are to be monitored closely by investors: <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the IEA Net Zero scenario is mentioned as the reference scenario to assess the credibility of companies\u2019 plans \u2013 making any new project a red line \u2013 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and disclosures are required on the rate of decline of oil and gas production and on capex devoted to upstream and exploration. Furthermore, the IIGCC stresses that current oil and gas production plans are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carbontracker.org\/reports\/adapt-to-survive\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>at odds with climate objectives<\/u><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and should be reviewed. More precisely, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the decline in oil and gas production ought to be drastic and swift, notably following the pathway laid out by the <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/productiongap.org\/\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>UN Production Gap report<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cmodels from the IPCC, IEA and others are clear that very large declines in oil and gas consumption are needed by 2050 if global emissions are to remain within the budget needed to limit the temperature rise to 1.5oC. Staying within this emissions budget also requires early action, particularly for oil. The 2020 Production Gap report estimates that with constrained reliance on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) deployment, oil consumption must fall by c.35-40% and gas by 25-30% between 2019 and 2030. The IEA estimates that oil consumption must fall c.28% by 2030 while gas consumption should fall by c.7% over the same time period.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (P.14)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Methane being a key driver of the oil and gas sector\u2019s contribution to global warming, the standard also requires companies to report on their methane emissions and to set plans to reduce them by 70% by 2030. This objective that seems in line with the expectations of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/global-methane-assessment-benefits-and-costs-mitigating-methane-emissions\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>UN\u2019s Global Methane Assessment<\/u><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, though the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>IEA\u2019s Net Zero<\/u><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> scenario features a 75% drop of methane emissions from the fossil fuel supply over the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More broadly, to ensure that companies\u2019 plans covers all of their emissions and entails a real reduction of their impact on global warming, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the standard requires net-zero pledges to apply to all activities and all types of emissions (scope 1 to 3 \u2013 methane and other gases included) and to set both absolute emission and intensity reduction targets<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Furthermore, IIGCC emphasizes that, while the link between executive remunerations and climate targets should be clearly disclosed, \u201c<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any link between remuneration and fossil fuel production growth should be removed<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-text-color:#59bc6d;--awb-margin-top:10px;--awb-margin-bottom:15px;--awb-font-size:16px;\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;--fontSize:16;--minFontSize:16;line-height:1.5;\"><b><span class=\"TextRun SCXW86237802 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW86237802 BCX0\">O<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW86237802 BCX0\">pening loopholes to keep on milking the fossil fuel cash cow<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW86237802 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h2><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, while the IIGCC\u2019s new standard looks in the right direction \u2013 namely the one of ending expansion of oil and gas production and then quickly reducing it &#8211; and accepts the findings of climate science, it also allows companies to significantly depart from this approach. First, the standard \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">does not specify emissions\/intensity reductions of a certain percentage by a certain date\u201d. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The only measure that an oil and gas company must specifically commit to meet the framework\u2019s requirements is \u201creducing its operational emissions (scope 1 &amp; 2) to net zero\u201d, which account for about <u><a href=\"http:\/\/priceofoil.org\/2020\/12\/12\/as-shell-faces-climate-lawsuit-in-dutch-court-production-data-confirms-the-oil-giant-is-on-track-to-shoot-far-past-1-5c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15% of the emissions the oil and gas industry<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A key assumption from the IIGCC is that\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab\u00a0there are multiple paths [companies] can take and the optimal strategy will vary\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Talking about \u201cstrategic flexibility\u201d, the standard further indicates that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis Standard aims to cover the full breadth of potential strategic responses including integrated companies focusing on reducing upstream production, exploration &amp; production (E&amp;P) companies adopting a \u201cwinddown\u201d or \u201charvest\u201d strategy, diversification (into petrochemicals for example), integrated companies reducing the emissions intensity of all sold products and strategies deploying Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) or Direct Air Capture (DAC).\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (P.8)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, companies are free to decide what is credible or not. They could notably <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">choose to diversify into \u201cpetrochemicals\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, thus feeding demand for their own fossil fuels. Similarly, companies can base their decarbonization strategy on carbon capture (CCS \/ CCUS \/ BECCS \/ DACS) and offsets. In fact, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the standard allows carbon removal to make up as much as 50% of emission reduction targets<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At this point the Standard does not propose direct limits on the individual use of neutralising measures such as CCUS, BECCS, DACS or offset but total neutralising measures should not account for the majority of the medium- and long-term emission reduction targets<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab\u00a0. (P.16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Considering the currently very limited and inefficient use of carbon capture technology, the expense and difficulties of large-scale deployment of negative emission technologies, the long-term uncertainties, and the fact that the removal of a ton of carbon <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/#FullReport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never fully offsets the global warming impact of a ton of carbon emitted<\/a><\/u>, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">allowing such a massive reliance on carbon capture and offsets empties transition plans of all credibility<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It is worth noting that the IEA\u2019s \u201cNet Zero 2050\u201d estimates about 22% of the total greenhouse gas reduction from 2020 to 2050 would be achieved through carbon capture, and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimfinance.org\/site\/en\/2021\/05\/18\/iea-stops-investments-in-fossil-fuel-supply-but-still-bets-on-false-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this number relies on very unrealistic assumptions about carbon capture<\/a><\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the standard asks for \u201cfeasibility studies\u201d on carbon capture deployment, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the specific disclosure requirements for carbon capture and offsets mostly allow investors to assess whether they are economically viable<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, notably by requiring disclosure of the cost of offsets, the cost of carbon capture investments and the carbon price under which they become \u201cprofitable\u201d. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carbon offsets are <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimfinance.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Consultation-response-Letter-from-RF-and-AW-to-TSVCM-June-19th-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>especially problematic<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and should not be considered in emission reduction targets<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: they fail to provide climate and environmental benefits and could provide a dangerous distraction to real greenhouse gas reductions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Betting massively on carbon removal, companies could maintain their oil and gas production plans while remaining broadly in line with the standard. Concretely, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">companies whose production trends are not aligned with a 1.5\u00b0C trajectory and which are developing new projects will just have to justify it, notably through additional disclosure on their capex<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In fact, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the standard allows companies to justify non-alignment on the ground of economic considerations<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, notably by proving their production costs are lower than its peers:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a company\u2019s planned cuts to oil or gas production in its medium- and long-term targets are not as large as that required by the adopted 1.5oC scenario it should state why by highlighting that its production costs are substantially lower than the industry average and\/or peers.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d (P.15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While an economic logic based on production costs could be used at the company level to prioritize the closure of production infrastructures \u2013 notably driving them to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carbontracker.org\/reports\/adapt-to-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>start by reducing unconventional oil and gas<\/u><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> production \u2013 it cannot be applied to the whole oil and gas sector. Indeed, the fact that one company will continue to produce cheaper oil or gas won&rsquo;t be compensated by another company reducing its production at a faster pace. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An oil and gas company won\u2019t \u201cchip in\u201d for another\u2019s climate shortcomings, each and every company must align its production with a 1.5\u00b0C trajectory<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span>Furthermore, any new fossil fuel production project is at odds with this trajectory and cannot be justified on any ground.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-text-color:#59bc6d;--awb-margin-top:10px;--awb-margin-bottom:15px;--awb-font-size:16px;\"><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-left fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><span class=\"awb-title-spacer fusion-no-large-visibility fusion-no-medium-visibility fusion-no-small-visibility\"><\/span><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;font-size:1em;--fontSize:16;--minFontSize:16;line-height:1.5;\"><b><span class=\"TextRun SCXW86237802 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW86237802 BCX0\">False solutions<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h2><span class=\"awb-title-spacer\"><\/span><div class=\"title-sep-container title-sep-container-right\"><div class=\"title-sep sep- sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#3e3e3e;\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p align=\"justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, the standard <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stresses that hydrogen and biofuels \u201ccan have both very different level of emissions reduction<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> according to how they are implemented and wider environmental impacts\u201d. However, it <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fails to provide minimum guidelines to align these activities with a 1.5\u00b0C and leaves it to \u201cregional taxonomies\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to decide whether they are to be considered \u00ab\u00a0green\u201d or not:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, hydrogen can be made cheaply from fossil fuels and, considering large conversion losses, can be a very emissions intensive and inefficient energy carrier. Likewise, growing biofuels can be both very emissions intensive (Scope 1 &amp; 2 emissions) and have wider negative social and biodiversity impacts. As set out in paragraph 53 this Standard aims to utilise appropriate regional taxonomies to attempt to address these complex issues.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d (P.17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To provide a robust alignment framework, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the IIGCC cannot ignore the climate science that clearly shows that hydrogen from fossil fuels &#8211; so-called \u201cgrey\u201d and <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/eandt.theiet.org\/content\/articles\/2021\/08\/blue-hydrogen-more-carbon-intensive-than-gas-and-coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<u>blue\u201d hydrogen<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> &#8211; and <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-transitions.org\/energy-transitions-commission-warns-demand-for-biomass-likely-to-exceed-sustainable-supply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>massive biomass reliance<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 notably by <\/span><\/b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimfinance.org\/site\/en\/2020\/12\/03\/funding-coal-conversion-to-biomass-is-it-a-green-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">dedicating forest to energy uses<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/u><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><u> <\/u>or increasing land-use for agricultural production for biofuels \u2013 are at odds with a 1.5\u00b0C trajectory<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It should forbid the development of hydrogen production from fossil fuels and limit biofuel production in oil and gas companies\u2019 plans. In this regard, the use of the IEA \u201cNet Zero\u201d scenario <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimfinance.org\/site\/en\/2021\/05\/18\/iea-stops-investments-in-fossil-fuel-supply-but-still-bets-on-false-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><u>could be problematic<\/u><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as it allows a significant share of hydrogen to be produced from gas and coal &#8211; 46% in 2030 and 38% in 2050 \u2013 and requires that more than a quarter of total available cropland to to be dedicated to bioenergy production.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1216.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p align=\"justify\"><b style=\"color: #8ac56b;\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">To conclude, the strong scientific foundations of the new \u201cNet Zero standard for oil and gas companies\u201d have been severely hampered. If the IIGCC recognizes the need to swiftly reduce production and immediately stop new projects, it allows companies to go in the opposite direction <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">and to justify it<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\"> on <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">economic<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\"> grounds. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">The result is a framework that allows massive reliance on unproven \u2013 or even environmentally dangerous \u2013 solutions instead of relying on scientifically-based production reduction trends. <\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #8ac56b;\">By doing so, it could allow the oil and gas majors that have been selected to trial the framework &#8211; BP, Shell, Eni, Repsol and TotalEnergies &#8211; and that already claim to be leading on the transition to misleadingly brand themselves as \u201cnet-zero\u201d.<\/span> <\/b><b style=\"color: #8ac56b;\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">The IIGCC should stick to the science, even if <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">this <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">inconveniently <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">requires <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194223338 BCX0\">ts members to get tough on oil and gas majors.
