This original language is quoted in the article below. The new criteria reiterate that members \u2014\u202fwhich include all the investors, banks and insurers in the Glasgow Financial Alliance on Net Zero (GFANZ) \u2014 must commit to a \u201cfair share\u201d of the 50% cut in global CO2 emissions that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says is needed by 2030 for global warming to stay under 1.5\u00b0C.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The need to slash emissions 50% by 2030 was included in the previous Race to Zero criteria. The new criteria, however, include much more detail on what will be needed to achieve this reduction, in particular with regard to fossil fuels, which despite being overwhelmingly the main contributor to global warming were not mentioned in the previous criteria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The key part of the Race to Zero is the \u201cStarting Line\u201d criteria, which are the minimum commitments that its members must make. Among the new additions to these Starting Line criteria are:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201chalting deforestation and phasing down and out all unabated fossil fuels as part of a global just transition\u201d <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Starting Line criteria, \u201cPledge\u201d);<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">members \u201cmust restrict the development, financing, and facilitation of new fossil assets.\u201d The criteria stress that \u201cthis includes no new coal projects\u201d <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Interpretation Guide, \u201cPledge\u201d, 5.b);<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">financial institutions must include in their targets all the emissions caused by their investments, lending, underwriting and insurance, including the Scope 3 emissions of the companies to which they provide these financial services <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Interpretation Guide, \u201cPledge\u201d, 2.b);<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">targets must include \u201cland-based emissions\u201d <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Starting Line criteria, \u201cPledge\u201d)<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">members must develop transition plans to show how they will meet their commitments, including what actions they will take within the following 12 months, 2-3 years, and by 2030 <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Starting Line criteria, \u201cPlan\u201d);<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">members must \u201calign external policy and engagement, including membership in associations, to the goal of halving emissions by 2030\u201d <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Starting Line criteria, \u201cPersuade\u201d).<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Race to Zero notes that \u201cdeveloping country actors may require more flexibility on their pathway to net zero and may find it challenging to halve their emissions by 2030.\u201d This implies that to meet their \u201cfair share\u201d of emission reductions financial institutions with most of their business in developed countries will need to more than halve their emissions in the next 7.5 years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among the Race to Zero\u2019s <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/climateaction.unfccc.int\/Initiatives?id=138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">more than ten thousand<\/span><\/a><\/u><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> members from the business world and local and regional governments are the more than 450 financial institutions which make up GFANZ. GFANZ, chaired by Michael Bloomberg and Mark Carney, does not set its own compulsory requirements, but instead requires compliance with the criteria of the Race to Zero. GFANZ is comprised of seven sectoral alliances including for asset owners, asset managers, banks and insurers, and includes many of the biggest players in global finance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><b>Paddy McCully, Senior Analyst at Reclaim Finance says: <\/b>\u201cThese new Race to Zero criteria throw down the gauntlet to Carney and Bloomberg and the GFANZ alliances and will require major improvements in what the alliances demand from their members. GFANZ is going to have to stop waffling on fossil fuels, and will have to insist that its members stop providing financial services to the companies driving the climaticide of coal, oil and gas expansion, while massively increasing their financing of the clean energy transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--link_hover_color:
