BNP Paribas announced that it will abstain from voting the climate resolution at Total\u2019s General Assembly on Friday. For Reclaim Finance, it is a polite way to signal that the oil company\u2019s last climate measures are largely insufficient. <\/strong><\/p>\n

11 shareholders, including<\/span> La Banque Postale AM, le Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel Asset Management<\/span>,<\/span> les Assurances du Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel <\/span>or<\/span> Meeschaert, <\/span>filed a resolution to<\/span> ask Total to <\/span>adopt absolute<\/span> decarbonization objectives and a detailed strategy to reach them, therefore aligning with the Paris Agreement(1). <\/span>Total reacted by announcing new climate commitments, a move s<\/span>upported by BNP Paribas and Hermes EOS(2). <\/span>The shareholders behind the climate resolution welcomed these a<\/span>nnouncements but assessed that they are largely insufficient and decided to maintain the resolution. <\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>Jean Lemierre<\/span>, President of BNP\u2019s board of directors, is also a member of Total\u2019s board, BNP declared that it <\/span>will<\/span> abstain <\/span>during the climate resolution vote(3). <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Lucie Pinson, Director of R<\/span>eclaim Finance, analyzes: \u201cAt the current stage, three votes are possible. Voting against<\/strong> the resolution<\/em><\/span>, which means that Total does enough for climate, a difficult position to justify with no targets to reduce absolute GHG emissions in the short or medium term(4). Voting for<\/strong> the resolution means recognizing climate urgency and modifying Total\u2019s strategy to protect both humankind and the company\u2019s interests. To abstain<\/strong> is simply a way to not publicly forsake the group,<\/em> while signaling that the current strategy is not up to the task and pushing Total to get back to work.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Last week, the biggest B<\/span>ritish pension fund<\/span>, Nest(5),<\/span> announced that it will vote for the resolution. <\/span>This resolution is historical, it is the first one o<\/span>f its type in France. <\/span>The votes of main French investors remain unknown. With entangled staff and directions, managers living in the s<\/span>ame world and high business stakes, climate may not be the decisional factor in their votes on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe are <\/em><\/span>pleasantly surprised by BNP Paribas Asset Management\u2019s decision, even if we would have hoped that it would go further and vote for the resolution. It will be all the more difficult for French investor<\/em>s like Amundi or AXA to justify a potential vote against the resolution now that the investor behind Total\u2019s new climate measures is recognizing that they are insufficient<\/em>\u201d conclude Lucie Pinson.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>
