These announcements come one month before the anniversary date of the <a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimfinance.org\/site\/en\/coal_policy_tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Paris financial centre&rsquo;s commitment<\/u><\/a> to ensure that French banks, insurers and investors have a coal exit policy by mid-2020. Only six other French financial groups have so far responded to this commitment.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both financial institutions announce their objective to completely exit coal by 2030. In order to achieve this, they will no longer make investments in companies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"><b>that develop new thermal coal projects, along the entire value chain;<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>that generate more than 30% of their turnover from thermal coal activities. This threshold will be lowered to 20% in 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"><b>That generate more than 30% of their electricity from coal, <\/b>or has more than 30% of its intsalled coal power capacity based on coal if the information about the coal share of power production is not publicly available<b>. <\/b><\/span><b>This threshold will be lowered to 20% in 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>whose the installed coal power capacity exceeds 10 GW. This threshold will be lowered to 5 GW in 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>OFI AM also specifies the exclusion of companies whose thermal coal production exceeds 20 million tonnes. This threshold will be lowered to 10 million tonnes in 2021. However, MACIF and OFI AM have already excluded all mining companies active in the coal sector from their investments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Furthermore, both players undertake to require the remaining companies in their portfolio to adopt a plan to close their coal assets. They are thus following what La Banque Postale AM, AG2R La Mondiale, AXA, Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel and CNP Assurances already announced. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>MACIF and OFI AM are adopting a very strong coal exit policy, as that adopted by Cr\u00e9dit<\/b> Mutuel. <span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">6 other French financial institutions have respected the joint commitment made last year by the French financial center to have all members with a coal exit policy by mid-2020: Cr\u00e9dit Agricole, <\/span>La Banque Postale AM<span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">, AXA, Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel, AG2R La Mondiale and the investor SCOR. There are now 8 French financial institutions with a coal exit policy aligned with a 1.5\u00b0C trajectory (1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"><b>All companies meeting the criteria above will be divested, except if they have made a commitment, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, to reduce their GHG emissions to a level aligned with a scenario of 2\u00b0C or lower. <\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">MACIF specifies in its press release that a \u00ab\u00a0monitoring of compliance with these commitments will be carried out\u00a0\u00bb. This is indeed essential because the SBT initiative validates medium-term decarbonation targets but does not monitor the measures taken to achieve them. Thus, a company could benefit from the SBT brand without having to work on an immediate transformation of its activities. <\/span><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"><b>To mitigate this risk, MACIF and OFI AM must therefore restrict their investments to SBT companies that also have a coal exit plan.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finally, MACIF and OFI also assert that they have the possibility to buy green bonds from companies that are now excluded. This can be problematic in the case of green bond issued by companies with carbon-intensive activities and that are not engaged in a genuine process of transforming their activities. <b>Nothing can justify the purchase of green bonds by players developing new projects in coal or in the most polluting fossil fuels. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-section-separator section-separator rounded-split fusion-section-separator-1 rounded-split-separator\" style=\"--awb-spacer-height:71px;--awb-svg-margin-left:0;--awb-svg-margin-right:0;\"><div class=\"fusion-section-separator-svg\"><div class=\"rounded-split top\" style=\"background-color:#333647;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-section-separator-spacer\"><div class=\"fusion-section-separator-spacer-height\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-padding-top:10px;--awb-padding-right:10px;--awb-padding-left:10px;--awb-overflow:hidden;--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-border-color:#ffffff;--awb-border-top:1px;--awb-border-right:1px;--awb-border-bottom:1px;--awb-border-left:1px;--awb-border-style:solid;--awb-border-radius:10px 10px 10px 10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p><span style=\"text-align: justify; color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">1. OFI AM manages almost all assets of MACIF that owns 60% of OFI AM&rsquo;s assets. However, OFI AM also manages the assets of other investors. Consequently, we consider them as two distinct institutions <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify; color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">in our count of groups with a coal exit policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\"
