Chibeze Ezekiel, Ghana<\/b><\/p>\n
As a direct result of Chibeze Ezekiel\u2019s four-year grassroots campaign, the Ghanaian Minister of the Environment canceled the construction of a 700-megawatt (MW) coal <\/span>power plant and adjoining shipping port to import coal. The coal power plant would <\/span>have been Ghana\u2019s first. Ezekiel\u2019s activism stopped the coal industry from entering <\/span>Ghana and steered the nation\u2019s energy future away from coal.<\/span><\/p>\nKristal Ambrose, Les Bahamas<\/b><\/p>\n
Drawing on the power of youth activism, Kristal Ambrose convinced the government of the Bahamas to ban single-use plastic bags, plastic cutlery, straws, and Styrofoam <\/span>containers and cups. Announced in April 2018, the nationwide ban is scheduled to go <\/span>into effect in January 2020.<\/span><\/p>\nLeydy Pech, Mexique<\/b><\/p>\n
Leydi Pech, an indigenous Mayan beekeeper, successfully halted the planting of genetically modified soybeans in southern Mexico. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled <\/span>that the government violated the Maya people\u2019s constitutional rights and subsequently <\/span>suspended the planting of genetically modified soybeans. Because of Pech\u2019s persistence, <\/span>in September 2017, Mexico\u2019s Federal Food and Agricultural Service revoked <\/span>Monsanto\u2019s permit to grow genetically modified soybeans in seven states.<\/span><\/p>\nNemonte Nenquimo, \u00c9quateur<\/b><\/p>\n
Nemonte Nenquimo led an indigenous campaign and legal action that resulted in a court ruling protecting 500,000 acres of Amazonian rainforest from oil extraction. <\/span>Ecuador\u2019s appeals court upheld the ruling in July 2019. Nenquimo\u2019s leadership and <\/span>the lawsuit set a legal precedent for indigenous rights in Ecuador, and other tribes are <\/span>following in her footsteps to protect additional tracts of rainforest from oil extraction.<\/span><\/p>\nPaul Sein Twa, Myanmar<\/b><\/p>\n
Seeking to preserve both the environment and Karen culture in Myanmar, in December 2018 Paul Sein Twa led his people in establishing a 1.35-million-acre peace park in the <\/span>biodiverse Salween River basin. Peace parks seek to preserve biodiversity and promote <\/span>political stability using a community-based, bottom-up approach. The Salween River <\/span>basin is home to the indigenous Karen people, who have fought a nearly 70-year civil <\/span>war against the central government in their quest for an independent state.<\/span><\/p>\nAbout the Goldman Environmental Prize<\/b><\/p>\n
