These expansion projects alone would use up three-quarters of the total remaining carbon budget if we are to have a 66% <\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #8ac56b;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">probability<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #8ac56b;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> of limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0 Celsius.<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #8ac56b;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> The group of organizations call the finance sector to rapidly move money and services such as insurance out of the fossil fuel industry. The first priority should be to no longer enable coal, oil and gas expansion projects &#8211; such as those covered in the report &#8211; to move forward.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 12 case studies highlight the immense environmental damage, violation of Indigenous rights, negative health impacts, human rights concerns and expected CO<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> emissions caused by each of the projects.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The case studies are: gas extraction in Mozambique; oil &amp; gas development in Suriname; oil &amp; gas drilling in the US Permian Basin; oil &amp; gas extraction in Argentina\u2019s Vaca Muerta region; coal and gas in Bangladesh\u2019s Payra Hub; China\u2019s new coal power plants; India\u2019s coal mines; coal expansion in the Philippines; gas extraction as part of Australia\u2019s Burrup Hub; drilling for oil &amp; gas in the Norway Barents Sea; oil &amp; gas projects and pipeline construction in the East Mediterranean; and offshore oil &amp; gas drilling in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Together, these 12 projects are expected to cause at least 175 gigatons of additional CO<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\"> equivalent emissions, should they move forward as intended by the companies involved.<\/span> <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><b style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">This is almost half of the 395 Gt of carbon budget remaining if we are to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C with a 50% probability. It is almost 75% of the remaining 235 Gt carbon budget which would provide a 66% probability of limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0C.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The companies represented in the most case studies are ExxonMobil, BP and Total.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These oil majors are each involved in six out of the eight oil and gas projects in the report. Shell <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and Chevron are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> involved in five of the eight oil and gas projects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Equinor <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> involved in <span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">four, while Repsol and Eni are each represented in three.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The report finds that financial institutions have provided $1.6 trillion in loans and underwriting since January 2016 and invested $1.1 trillion in bonds and shares in the 133 companies driving the 12 fossil fuel expansion projects<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\">.<\/span> <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\">20 investors provided almost half of the total investments \u2013 $535 billion of the total $1.1 trillion \u2013 identified in the report.<\/span> <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among the top investors, US financial institutions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, led by BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are the worst offenders. Only four of the top 20 investors are not from the US: the Norwegian Government Pension Fund<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UBS (Switzerland), Deutsche Bank (Germany) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Legal &amp; General (UK)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The top 20 banks provided more than half of the total funding to the fossil fuel companies involved in these 12 projects<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\">.<\/span> <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The US banks <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">CitiGroup<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">Bank of America<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">JPMorgan Chase<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\"> are the top financiers with a total of <\/span><\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">$295 billion<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">There are eight European banks among the top 20. Together, they provided <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">$3<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">08 <\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">billion<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><b style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\"> <\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">led by <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Barclays ($66.4 billion) <\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> HSBC ($55.2 billion)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">, and followed by <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">BNP Paribas ($52.7 billion<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #59bc6d;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">The Japanese <\/span><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">banks <\/span><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">in the top 20, <\/span><\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Mitsubishi<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Mizuho<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">SMBC,<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> provided financing worth <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">$149 billion<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #e5e3e3;\">.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\"
