The Banking on Climate Chaos 2023 (BOCC) report, published on Thursday 13 April by Reclaim Finance and six other NGOs (1), demonstrates the massive role of BNP Paribas in financing the expansion of fossil fuels, the main drivers of climate change. The French bank was quick to counter-attack: attacking the report’s methodology, a classic way of trying to divert attention from its failure to align its practice with its climate commitments (2). Here, Reclaim Finance answers the main criticisms and defends the methodology, which is completely transparent and has been tried and tested since 2016.
