Press release

Paris and Charm el-Cheikh, 15 november 2022 – As COP27 continues in Egypt, an international report, published by Urgewald, Friends of the Earth France, Reclaim Finance and 36 African organizations, lifts the veil on the companies and financial players that are pursuing oil and gas expansion in Africa and weakening this continent already on the front line of climate change impacts. French players, in particular BNP Paribas but also the Crédit Agricole Group through its subsidiary Amundi, are singled out as the biggest supporters of companies that intend to develop new fossil fuel projects in Africa. Among them is the French major TotalEnergies, the largest oil and gas developer in Africa. The NGOs denounce the greenwashing of financial actors who are committed to achieving net zero, and call on international finance to finally take action against the fossil fuel expansion.
