The heat waves and mega-fires observed in Europe this summer are once again an echo of the climate emergency. Drought in South America, floods in Australia, the year 2022 is already marked by numerous extreme climatic events of a rare intensity. It is with heavy losses that the world’s largest reinsurers, including Munich Re, Swiss Re, Hannover Re and SCOR, are meeting today at the Rendez-Vous de Septembre in Monte Carlo to begin negotiations on their future contracts. Let’s hope that the luxurious and relaxed setting of the event will not distract the French SCOR and the German Munich Re from the priority of the moment: to avoid further aggravating the climate catastrophe and to follow without further delay their peers Swiss Re and Hannover Re in their decision to no longer underwrite the risks linked to the expansion of oil and gas production
